The land of renewable castles

The Castle of Füzér sits atop a hill above the village that gave its name. It first mention was in 1264 in a decree. Péter Perényi crown guard safeguarded the Holy Crown for some time in the castle around 1526 during the most blood stained period of Hungarian history. Later Gábor Perényi added a Renaissance palace wing and made the fort a bit cosier. This was the splendour of the castle that later become the property of the treasury and without any maintenance it began to decay. The castle that lost its military importance was made unusable by the garrison before they left in 1676. In the first part of the XX Century the current owner, the Károlyi family made a state preservation on the ruins. A couple of years ago a huge reconstruction began and in result the castle is in a state that allows visitors.

The University of Miskolc is the successor of the first technical higher educational institution of the world, the Mining-Metallurgy Academy found in 1735 in Selmecbánya. With its almost 11 thousand university citizens it works as almost a separate ‘town’ but it lives in a close symbiosis with Miskolc, and the locally settled, mo-dern technology establishing and developing companies.

The tiny area of the Grasslands of Nyír is part of the Western border of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. This land is the transition between the world of the Nyírség and the grass barrens of the Lowlands. The print of this duality is present in the network of villages, in the folk culture and in the soul of the people living here. István Széchenyi made the first steps regarding the regulation of the River Tisza at the land forming in the shadows of the sand and the grassland of Nyírség.
