     Békéscsaba in the
                                            Árpád Age
                     Nine towns flourished in today’s area of Békéscsaba. These
                     are the modern districts of the town today. Csaba was fi rst
                     mentioned in the 1332 tax census. In the Middle Ages, the
                     town was the estate of the Ábrahámffy family. In those
                     days, Csaba supported the Kuruc rebels and Gyula sup-
                     ported the Habsburgs, so there was a war between the two
                     towns for decades. The people of Gyula fi nally destroyed
                     the Castle of Csaba in 1556 with the help of Habsburg
                     soldiers. The town lost its population during the Turkish
                     times. People settled in the town from 1718 again. Dur-
                     ing the 300 years of prosperity since then, the town has
                     been characterized by the quick growth of the population,
                     dynamic industrialization, intensive trade, development,
                     growth, and a real business boom.
