Békéscsaba in the
Árpád Age
Nine towns flourished in today’s area of Békéscsaba. These
are the modern districts of the town today. Csaba was fi rst
mentioned in the 1332 tax census. In the Middle Ages, the
town was the estate of the Ábrahámffy family. In those
days, Csaba supported the Kuruc rebels and Gyula sup-
ported the Habsburgs, so there was a war between the two
towns for decades. The people of Gyula fi nally destroyed
the Castle of Csaba in 1556 with the help of Habsburg
soldiers. The town lost its population during the Turkish
times. People settled in the town from 1718 again. Dur-
ing the 300 years of prosperity since then, the town has
been characterized by the quick growth of the population,
dynamic industrialization, intensive trade, development,
growth, and a real business boom.
