The history of
Békéscsaba in
a nutshell
Nine towns flourished in today’s area of Békéscsaba. Th ese
are the modern districts of the town today. Csaba was fi rst
mentioned in the 1332 tax census.
In the Middle Ages, the town was an estate of the Áb-
rahámffy family. There was a century-long property dis-
pute between the lords of Csaba and the landlords of ne-
ighbouring Gyula. Finally, the garrison of Gyula castle de-
stroyed the Castle of Csaba in 1556, so the town was com-
pletely depopulated during the Ottoman rule in Hungary.
The town lost its population during the Turkish times.
People settled in the town from 1718 again. During the
300 years of prosperity since then, the town has been char-
acterized by the quick growth of the population, dynamic
industrialization, intensive trade, development, growth,
and a real business boom.
