in the mansions of great lords
Our fortresses:
For those interested in the monuments of our history, the
table is set in our county: the fortress tours are almost man-
datory.
The fortress of Nógrád, which the county is named aft er, is
perhaps the oldest Hungarian fortress, and it may have been
one of the venues of our King St. Stephen while he was found-
ing the state. It has been awaiting its visitors with knights’ tour-
naments in the summer for years. Then there is the fortress of
Drégely, with the hero Szondy and his self-sacrifi cing soldiers,
showing a touching example of the most devout patriotism.
Every Hungarian must once feel the historical air of Drégely.
If you just want to feel pure romance, visit the ruins of the
fortress of Szanda. You will not be disappointed.
Salgó’s proud fortress, an inspiration to our poet Sándor
Petőfi, rises above the county seat. From here, only a can-
non shot away, the famous fortress of Somoskő of the Balassi
and Losonczy families can be seen, but it is situated on the
other side of the state border. The fortress of Fülek (Fiľakovo),
which also serves as a museum today, is only a long run from
the fortress of Somoskő.
Our castles:
If our guests wished to visit all of the castles of our county one
after the other, their annual holiday would soon be consumed.
Therefore, we start by recommending the castles that also
serve as hotels from among the castles worth a visit. Such
castles are the Kállay Castle Hotel in Bercel, the Szentmiklóssy
Castle Hotel in Erdőtarcsa, the Majláth Castle Sanatorium
and Castle Hotel in Nógrádgárdony, and the Europe-famous
Teleki-Degenfeld Castle Hotel in Szirák. Our hunting castles
are also waiting for guests in Nagyoroszi, Mátrakeresztes, and
Alsópetény.
Gürky-Solymosi Castle in Kisterenye, Simonyi Castle in
Szügy, Almássy Castle in Felsőpetény, Madách Mansion in
Csesztve, and Forgách Castle in Szécsény offer many sights
and attractions to their visitors.
