Active recreation

                        in Somogyland

In addition to the healthy lifestyle, today’s serious chal-
lenges are the transition to environmentally conscious
transport and the realization of active recreation. Earlier,

it was difficult due to the lack of infrastructure. Fortunately,

in recent years, developments have started all over the
country, and also in Somogy, which opened up possibili-
ties for those who choose active recreation. Th e cycling

infrastructure connecting the new attractions and creat-
ing a network has been developed as a response to the
social demands in this regard. Today, Lake Balaton is easily
accessible from Budapest on two wheels, and thanks to
the Balaton Circle, anyone can cycle around it without
any problems. The tourists who wish to get to know the

Somogy region better, should leave the “Hungarian Sea”
for Külső and Belső-Somogy (Outer and Inner Somogy),
cycle on the Kis-Balaton (Small Balaton) experience circle,
and admire our natural beauties on the cycle path around
Lake Deseda, chosen as Hungary’s most beautiful cycle
path in 2022. Moreover, the riders can now cycle through
the picturesque countryside of Zselic from Szenna to
Bőszénfa, or from Visnyeszéplak to Bárdudvarnok, how-
ever, the EuroVelo Iron Curtain path also touches South
Somogy, just like the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail. Th e
latter trail runs from Mureck in Austria to Mohács, con-

necting five countries (Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hun-
gary, and Serbia) and visiting the natural beauties, built
and cultural treasures and villages of the Mura-Dráva and
                     Danube rivers.

The section in Somogy touches Őrtilos, Zákány, Gyéké-
nyes, Kaszó, Nagyatád, Barcs, and the villages along the
River Dráva. And in our towns, among other things, the
built bike lanes and bike paths make it easier to cycle to
work. In addition to hiking (“tourism in boots”), the pic-
turesque countryside of Somogy also offers many att rac-

tions to cyclists, those interested in folk traditions, in the
opportunities for cultural recreation, and those who would
like to immerse themselves in the mysteries of gastronomy
                     will not be disappointed either.
