Lake Balaton
our Riviera
Europe’s largest freshwater lake, the “Hungarian Sea” is a par-
adise for enthusiasts of water sports, anglers, and families
looking for a relaxing holiday with its high-quality hotels,
restaurants, and modernized beaches.
Lake Balaton provides the venue for Europe’s longest and
oldest lake sailing competition, the “Blue Ribbon”, which
has been held here since 1934. When we think of the lake,
we usually remember the suntan oil, the fried fl atbread, and
the cooked sweetcorn, while those who walk with their eyes
open will find a real fairy tale here, because Lake Balaton is an
exciting place. Its coastline in Veszprém County off ers unpar-
alleled experiences in all seasons; it is well worth visiting the
lakeside towns and villages.
Balatonfüred is the city of grape and wine; the first spa resort
in Hungary. There were seven mineral water springs in its area;
the town was declared a spa resort due to their healing eff ect in
1700. Lake Balaton’s first steamship “Kisfaludy” set sail from
the shores of the most popular spa resorts of Hungary in Sep-
tember 1846. The exhibition venues offer great recreation for
the whole family: the Villa Vaszary, the House of Jewish Excel-
lence, the Bodorka Visitors’ Centre, or the memorial house of
Mór Jókai, a special building highlighting the town’s literary
history. The Anna Ball, which has been held each year since
1825, has gained international fame, and it’s recently became
hungaricum, while the Wine Week and the Balaton Fish and
Wine Festival also attract thousands of people to the lakeside
town each year.
