Natural treasures of Hajdú-Bihar County

Rivers had determining role in the formation of the heath, which is one of the symbols of Hungary. The territory, which was a woody steppe, was the free slob of River Berettyó and River Tisza. Rich, natural habitats are the woods, forests, the recreated moorland or the habitats in one of the world’s biggest artificial lake systems. The birds’ wildlife of the moors and lake has a significant role in European level too, because it is the place of their nesting and passing. The passing of the cranes and wild geese in Hortobágy is internationally famous.
The artificial kurgans, which are very important from cultural history point of view, hold the clues of human settlements in the bronze and copper age. It is called ‘kunhalom’ which was hills of homes, sepulchral mounds, border and guard heaps. The memories of the villages, which ruined in the age of Ottoman Hungary, are the ruins of churches and the names of these parts.
The tradition of the extensive animal husbandry, raising of Hungarian grey cattle, racka and mangalitza pig still exists nowadays. The symbol of the heath is Hortobágy stud and it was evolved by the ‘Nóniusz’ horse kind and the virtuoso art of Hungarian riders. Visitors can get acquainted with the Hungarian horse culture with the Máta stud.
