The wine
region of
Villány
The wines of the wine region of Villány are considered by
professionals and consumers to be among the best on the
Hungarian wine market.
After the political changes, the fi rst winemakers of Villány
created a quality that can be compared to the products of
the famous European wine regions.
In addition to the traditional Portugieser and Bluefränkisch
grapes, varieties known throughout the world such as Ca-
bernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zweigelt
were naturalized in this region. Together with the white
wines of Siklós, visitors can fi nd an incredibly wide selec-
tion of wines here.
The values of the region include the listed old rows of wine
cellars of Pálka, Villánykövesd, Nagyharsány, and Kishar-
sány.
Based on excellent wine, Villány and its surroundings await
tourists with a wide range of cultural offerings and festivals.
The three-day Red Wine Festival of Villány stands out with
its programmes and its timing, which is connected to the
harvest.
It was an old tradition in Villány that the harvested grapes
were celebrated by the locals with a cheerful harvest proces-
sion and a party until the break of dawn. That former tradi-
tion has gained new strength since Villány became the City
of Grape and Wine in 1987, and its festival with att ractive
and diverse music, prose, and professional entertainment
programmes has gradually become well-known nation-
wide.
Today, tens of thousands of people are attracted to the event
on the first weekend of October, enhancing the reputation
of the town and the wines of Villány.
