Legends, contracts,
engagement gifts and
watch boxes
This is what a real County is like
Diósgyőr, Edelény, Füzér, Füzérradvány, Boldogkőváralja, Sirok,
Regéc, Tokaj, Sárospatak, Vadna, Pácin, Szerencs. Only a few of the
dozens of towns and villages that are proud of their fortress or castle
in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. The fortresses of Borsod-Abaúj-
Zemplén witnessed the stormy centuries of history, the major events
of the centuries, and moreover, these buildings generally played a key
role. They protected and preserved the population and the culture
of our region. The once imposing buildings are real time machines
that take you back to the past, all the way back to prehistoric times.
Many of them are imposing and commanding places even as ruins.
The ancient walls quietly tell centuries-old stories to the soul. Many
fortresses and castles are shining again aft er getting their old ‘ap-
pearance’ back. Preserving the past and filling the present with life.
In Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, in the last decade, fortresses and
castles were renovated at a cost of 22.5 billion Forints.
Thanks to the castle reconstruction, the castles of Füzér, Boldogkő
and Diósgyőr, among others, shine again in their old glory; the castle
of Diósgyőr was the engagement gift to the queen consorts of the
past. In addition to the many other wonderful parts of the building,
the largest knight’s hall in Central Europe is also found here.
The Castle of Füzér stands on top of a steep volcanic cone in the
Zemplén Mountains. Visitors will never forget the sight of the huge
castle on top of a regular hill. There is a spectacular view from the
top of the tower. The Castle of Füzér is the “top decoration” of the
552-metre-high Castle Hill. In 2008, the Castle Hill of Füzér was
awarded the title of ‘natural wonder of Hungary’.
The renovated Károlyi Castle in Füzérradvány, a building of three
thousand square metres, was built according to the designs of Mik-
lós Ybl in a romantic-eclectic style. The castle still has the table on
which Count Sándor Károlyi, son of László Károlyi, signed the Peace
Treaty of Szatmár in 1711.
One of the most beautiful baroque buildings in Hungary awaits lov-
ers of culture and architecture in Edelény.
