The Castle Museum in Esztergom Castle shows visitors why
the Castle Hill is called the cradle of our state’s founding, as
well as being the secular and ecclesiastical centre of medieval
Hungary. As it was one of the links in the Limes border along
the River Danube, there were constructions on the hill and
at its foot, even in Roman times. Perhaps its signifi cance was
really appreciated when Great Prince Géza placed his seat
here, and his son István was born and crowned here, in his
hometown. Our state-founding king made Esztergom the
ecclesiastical centre of his country. His successors continued
building and expanding the royal residence over the centuries.
