Castle Hill

the cradle of our state’s founding

Not even the Mongols managed to occupy the castle sitt ing
50 metres above the River Danube. However, King Béla IV

presented the castle to the archbishop’s court after the Mongol

invasion. The Renaissance, humanist archbishop János Vitéz,

the educator of King Matthias, formed a magnificent court on

the Castle Hill. The wall of his former study was adorned with

a fresco of the four cardinal virtues; the one depicting Temper-
ance was presumably painted by Botticelli. In the museum,

visitors can see how the Castle Hill looked like in the diff erent
historical eras, study the weapons and the household objects
of bygone ages, and admire the recently restored magnifi cent
castle chapel of King Béla III.
