In the footsteps of
heroes
Let us mention 4 events from the rich history of our county:
From the time of the fortress batt les, the heroic att itude
of György Szondi and his small team, while defending the
Castle of Drégely, is unimaginable today. Szondi with his 80
people resisted the 14,000-strong army of Ali Pasha of Buda
for four days. The defenders eventually lost, but the Turks
became tired and did not continue their campaign towards
the mining towns in Upper Hungary. The glorious site can
still be visited.
For all people of Nógrád it is an eternal pride that Rákóczi,
the great ruler, held a parliament in Szécsény in 1705. In this
beautiful and historic small town, Rákóczi’s spirit is still alive
today. Come and feel it.
Great personalities played main roles in Hungary’s history
during the last century, in the great historic times.
On 29th January, 1919, the Hungarian soldiers and the lo-
cals took weapons to chase away the Czechs from Balassa-
gyarmat, showing self-sacrificing heroism. Thus, they saved
the city for the homeland. And this city is now proud to
hold the well-deserved rank of Civitas Fortissima (the Brav-
est Town).
In the north-eastern corner of the county, two villages,
Somoskő and Somoskőújfalu came back from their Czec-
hoslovakian exile after four years, in 1924, giving proof that
even the Treaty of Trianon can be revised. This was thanks
to Dr. Géza Krepuska, an ear specialist and local land-owner,
and his helpers. In December 2017, the Parliament granted
the two repatriated towns the title Pagi ad Patriam Reversi
(Returned Village). Today, in Somoskőújfalu, the Return
Memorial House is waiting for those interested in the topic.
