Sóstó Open
Air Museum
Where tradition is an
experience!
The Sóstó Open Air Museum is the second largest open-
air ethnographic museum in the country and the only one
in the region; the greater part of the museum devoted to a
fictitious two-street village.
While taking a peek into the houses and walking in their
gardens, the visitor will understand how people used to
live in the villages. In addition to the household appliances
and the farm tools, we can also take a look at the market
town’s workshops, which served the peasantry, including
an old blacksmith’s workshop or the barber shop. In 2014,
an archaeological park was added to the village where the
visitors can discover part of a village from the Árpád Era.
Some of the buildings house thematic exhibitions, such as
“Everything comes to light” - presents the history of the
objects used for lighting, from the candles to the kerosene
lamps until the moment when the electricity has appeared.
Those who are not familiar with the meaning of the words
‘soak, tenderize, smooth clothes’, should definitely see the
exhibition “My shirt, my pants are dirty...”. To soak up the
atmosphere of an old wedding, visit the exhibition “Wed-
ding, lots of people, no woman is ill now!”.
In the village, the guests can also participate in the events
connected to the holidays. On such occasions, we can expe-
rience how our grandparents celebrated Easter or Pente-
cost, what folk customs were connected to these important
days, and we can also taste their typical dishes.
