Bereg,
„Plum
Bereg”
Villages with a small
population and huge
hospitality!
Bereg is a cross-border region in the Northern Great
Plain. It is bordered on the west by the Nyírség and
on the north by the Tisza river. A major part of the
region belongs to Transcarpathia, and a smaller part is
located in Hungary. As a result of later administrative
arrangements, Bereg became part of Szabolcs-Szat-
már, which is now reflected in the name of the county.
The Szatmár-Bereg region is usually mentioned to-
gether, where, due to the integrity of the landscape,
the archaic features of its architecture and culture have
been preserved.
In Tomcsányi Castle, which is the Bereg Museum in
Vásárosnamény, we can get an insight into the every-
day life of old times: from the cradle to the shroud;
life in the old school; love; works of art; ceramics; cast
iron, and woven fabrics. After a walk in the museum, it
is easier to imagine the life of the people who lived in
Bereg. And if the traveller encounters the monuments
from old times - in churches and memorial sites, it is
no coincidence!
