The historical county

The bastions of history

The Ozora Fortress Castle, or the fortresses of Dunaföldvár and
Simontornya are iconic sights of Tolna County. Th ey symbol-
ize survival. In addition to being almost the same age as the
national state, they used to serve to protect the homeland and
the Christian European values. Th e Ott oman occupation af-
fected Tolna County to a large extent, and greatly determined
its current situation in terms of the composition of nationality,

folk traditions, or further development. The exhibitions of the

castles give an insight into this special little world, the historical
processes, and the past of the county.
Ozora is a piece of the Renaissance world in this region. Th e
“Pippo” Castle commemorates the glories of victories over the

Ottoman empire, as the knight, Pippo Spano (Filippo Scolari)
was a great soldier of King Sigismund, who also won the love

of Borbála Ozorai. The Gothic-style castle stood out among
the other castles of the time, which is explained by the Italian
origin of the Pippo Castle.

The way of the “worshippers of fortresses” can lead to Simon-

tornya (Simon’s tower). The town was named aft er Solomon’s
son, Simon, the judge royal and the tower he had built.
