Since 1934, the Blue Ribbon Round Lake Balaton Race, the
longest and oldest sailing race event of Europe, has been held
here. One of the greatest success stories in Hungarian sports
history began here on the bitumen tracks of Veszprém 48
years ago, resulting in the men’s handball team of Veszprém
winning 28 Hungarian championship titles, 31 Hungarian
Cup victories, the Club World Championship title, and fi ve
SEHA League victories. We are proud of our athletes, our Veszprém
Olympic champions, our competitions with a history of
several decades, and also the local clubs that have been in
existence for more than a hundred years and have trained County
and provided future generations for our sports clubs.
Over the last ten years or so, sports facilities have sprouted
from the ground like mushrooms – including athletic com-
plexes, training and sports swimming pools, gymnastics the citadel of sports
halls and ice rinks – which not only help our schoolchildren
and top athletes to train, but also provide the young and
the old with the opportunity to enjoy their favourite form
of exercise, e.g. skiing, ice hockey, futsal, ballet, or even wall
climbing.
We believe that sport teaches us to win fairly or lose with our
heads held high. Thus, sport teaches us everything. Th is is
the reason why the city of Veszprém decided to apply for
the title of European Region of Sport 2026, together with
the towns and villages of the Balaton region.
