Quiet alleys, always tolling bells. Sultry and romantic sum-
mer evenings with an always blowing wind. Arches with
gaping depths, towers that reach the sky. Hills and valleys.
Great parties, festivals and quiet reverence. Majestic royal
past and innovative, dynamic vision of the future. Th is is
Veszprém, the county seat, in everyday life.
The legacy of King István and Queen Gizella is also a real
and eternal guideline for modern people. The true his-
tory and spirituality of their person, personality, existence,
and actions still interweave everyday life and live on in the
town’s culture, hustle and bustle, and every breath.
Veszprém Castle is home to religious monuments and mo-
dern arts: entering through the Castle Gate, the towers of
the churches rise in place of the former houses of craft s-
men, and in the depths of the courtyard with arched en-
trances, contemporary exhibition spaces are hidden in the
shadow of the Fire Tower.
Hungary’s first countryside zoo, Veszprém Zoo, is located
in a picturesque environment which attracts hundreds of
thousands of tourists to the county seat each year. Th e
plant and animal park opened its doors to the general pub-
lic on 1st August 1958, more than 60 years ago.
