There is an extremely lively and high-quality art life in

Győr-Moson-Sopron County. The theatrical life is based
on old traditions in both towns of county rank, in Győr
                     and in Sopron.

Th e first stone theatre was built in Győr in 1798, on today’s

Radó Island. The current new theatre, with its characteris-
tic shape, was opened in 1978. Two sides of the building
are decorated with Victor Vasarely’s ceramic work of art.
From 1992, the institution has been called the Győr Na-

tional Th eatre. The building of the theatre of Sopron was
constructed in the early 1800s and underwent complete

renovation several times. Th e Petőfi Theatre of Sopron
was formed in 1991. Both institutions await their audi-
ences with great performances and colourful programmes.
The Ballet of Győr was founded by the graduating class of

the Hungarian State Ballet Institute in 1979. It was very
special both in the life of Hungarian dance and in the cul-
tural history of the city of Győr. The ensemble raises the ar-

tistic standard with its constantly renewed repertoire year
by year, opening an ever-widening horizon to its audience.

The Philharmonic Orchestra of Győr, a city orchestra
founded in 1894, is now a professional orchestra. Highly
successful performances have been staged in almost every
country in Europe, and also on the most important mu-
sic stages in Asia. In addition to its performances in Győr,
the orchestra awaits its audience on the stage of the Hang-
villa in Veszprém, in the Vértes Agora in Tatabánya, in the
ProKultura in Sopron, in the Flesch Center in Mosonma-
gyaróvár, and in the Benedek Csaplár City Cultural Centre
                     in Dunajská Streda.
