Cultural
adventures
The scenes of the cultural life in Kaposvár are also signifi -
cant from an architectural point of view. Th e museum,
which welcomes its visitors with a rich fine art exhibition
- partly from the art collection of Ödön Rippl-Rónai - op-
erates in the building of the reform-era County Hall on Fő
Street. The building is an outstanding work of Hungarian
Classicist architecture.
One of the most emblematic buildings of Kaposvár is the
Gergely Csiky Th eatre. The theatre, which also has Art
Nouveau features and was designed by Ede Magyar and
József Stahl, was opened in 1911. A permanent company
has been playing here since 1955. From the seventies, the
“phenomenon of Kaposvár” became a well-known con-
cept throughout the country. Theatre lovers came here for
the high-quality performances prepared with outstanding
professional work. During the comprehensive renovation
and expansion works completed in 2019, the theatre re-
ceived a new, sunken, accessible entrance, and the terra-
cotta colour dominates its façade again. The theatre has a
repertoire of musical, prose, and children’s plays, and the
park surrounding it is also worth a visit.
Built in 1928 with Art Deco features based on the designs
of József Lamping, the town’s cinema is known as the Rain-
bow Palace of Culture today. Egyptian features appear on
the exterior and interior decorations of the building, which
shows how much influence the discovery of Tutankha-
mun’s tomb in 1922 and the wealth of motifs found at that
time had on the era’s architecture.
The town’s cultural centre operates in a modern building;
the Vaszary Gallery houses temporary exhibitions of a high
professional standard.
