Throughout the city, we can find statues that make you stop and
take pictures. István Széchenyi and Lajos Kossuth are freemen
of our town, their statues stand in the squares named aft er them.
Prime Minister Imre Nagy was born in Kaposvár, and his statue
Public was inaugurated on the 40th anniversary of the 1956 revolution
in the park bearing his name. The painter József Rippl-Rónai also
squares appears in several places: he sits next to the fountain pool in the
Rippl-Rónai Park, on a donkey cart on Fő Street, while his statue
with the one of Endre Ady is found in the street named aft er the
and parks poet.
The works of many artists of Kaposvár decorate our public spaces
and parks. Tótágas (Clown) is ‘stretching himself’ in the Europe
adorned Park, while Igéző (Enchanter) is watching the street from the
wall of house at No. 1 Fő Street and Florentin is sitting in front
with statues of the Rainbow Culture Palace; these statues are all the works
of art of Klára Weeber, who decorated her sculptures with small
verses. The Playing Children in front of the house at no. 10 Ady
Endre Street (the work of Rita Sörös) is mainly popular among
the children. István Bors’ sculpture titled Napkerék (Sun Wheel),
located in the Europe Park, also functions as a carousel, while his
works of art depicting the four seasons decorate the pools of the
fountains in the Noszlopy Street.
At the beginning of the 2000s, a new tradition took root in Ka-
posvár. In order to strengthen the feeling of belonging within the
town, the municipality, together with the families, planted a tree
for the small children living here. However, due to the shortage
of available spaces, we celebrate the expansion of the local com-
munity in a different way today. The Tree of Life bronze statue was
completed with the help of sculptor Katalin Gera, on which more
than 2,000 copper leaves with the names and the dates of birth of
the children were placed. The growth of Kaposvár is shown by the
fact that the leaves filled the foliage of the statue in just a few years,
and so a second Tree of Life was completed in 2012, and a third
Tree of Life in 2021; all with the participation of Katalin Gera.
