Sóstógyógyfürdő
the National
Health Resort
Sóstógyógyfürdő, the gem of Nyíregyháza, located only 6
kilometres from the city centre and surrounded by an oak
forest, was named after its saltwater, saline lake. Formerly,
during the summer, sparkling water was produced from the
natron deposited on the shores of the lake, which, in those
days, was more profitable than medicinal water. Recognizing
the favourable physiological effects of the lake, a bath house
was built at the beginning of the 1800s. The area, which has
now become a tourist centre, awaits those who wish to relax
with quality hotels and restaurants.
The lake is not only suitable for swimming, but also for row-
ing, paddle boating, and fishing, and sports enthusiasts can
indulge their passion for running on the polyurethane track
around the lake.
One of the largest and most spectacular musical fountains in
the country attracts crowds into the park, which was opened
in 1912. Th e attraction located in front of the experience spa
impresses the passers-by with sound and light effects on a
water surface of about 500 square metres from spring to
autumn. The fountain, which plays pop music hits, cartoon
soundtracks and classical music with a light show, has be-
come a favourite of adults and children. The fountain is able
to project a dynamic water picture, rarely seen in Europe.
For example, even the tourist city film of Nyíregyháza can
be watched on the water vapour.
