In the home town of Gyula Krúdy, Mihály Váci and Gyula
Benczúr, the Cultural District was created in the embrace of
two adjacent downtown squares by rethinking the values of
the past. Bessenyei Square is home to the much-acclaimed
Móricz Zsigmond Theatre, and the theatre history event Cultural
space named after Szindbád, the legendary figure by Gyula
Krúdy, stands right next to it, where the guests will fi nd,
among other things, a 3D cinema, a podium stage, as well district -
as a cosy restaurant and café. The renovated elegant build-
ing of Kállay House is located in the neighbourhood of preservation
Szindbád, which was once the home of Miklós Kállay,
Prime Minister of Hungary, and is now a worthy venue of values and
for the Kállay Collection, where the visitors can admire
the special legacy of the aristocratic family. The latest att rac-
tion of the Cultural District is the Greek Catholic Museum, relaxation in
whose permanent exhibition presents the history of the
Greek Catholic Church over four centuries. Moreover, the heart of the
interesting temporary exhibitions, cultural and musical
programmes wait for those who wish to get familiar with city centre
the Greek Catholic Church, its traditions and culture. Th e
oldest cultural building on the Benczúr Square is the Jósa
András Museum, whose imposing building - due to current
renovation - can only be admired from the outside. Th e
square ends in the Rózsakert (‘Rose Garden’) Open-Air
Theatre, which is the venue of many amusing plays on cosy
summer nights.
The Cultural District is made complete by educational
institutions, sculptures by artists with ties to Nyíregyháza,
and restaurants offering modern gastronomy.
