Nyíregyháza was first mentioned in 1209 – under the
name “Nyír” – but it only became particularly signifi cant
several hundred years later. The former Nyíregyháza was
almost depopulated during the years of the Ott oman rule,
The perpetual when its population decreased to a few hundred people.
Count Ferenc Károlyi tried to prevent the threatening de-
redemption is population by issuing a charter on 16 May 1753 for the re-
settlement of his estates. Thanks to the resett lement, the
population of Nyíregyháza started to increase rapidly, in
two hundred the previously barren countryside. In 1786, the town was
granted its market town privilege, and in 1824, thanks to
years old the perpetual redemption contract, it was able to get rid
of the burdens of the landlords, then in 1876, the continu-
ously developing Nyíregyháza became the seat of Szabolcs
County.
