Rétköz circular route




                                  Bike tour among the memories of
                                          bygone eras and lands



                     Route: Nyíregyháza – Nagyhalász – Ibrány – Paszab –  declared a historical memorial site in 2023. In addition to
                     Tiszabercel – Gávavencsellő – Balsa – Szabolcs – Tímár  the historical and monumental values, the route touches
                     – Rakamaz – Nyírtelek – Nyíregyháza      many places important in terms of ethnography; the
                     Length of the tour: 92 km                weaver’s house in Paszab shows the famous hand-woven
                                                              textiles of Paszab, and in Gávavencsellő, we can see the
                     Rétköz is the deep floodplain of the upper section of the  traditions of the Swabians, who sett led there.

                     Tisza River in Szabolcs, which stretches between the Ló-
                     nyai channel and the Tisza River from Tuzsér all the way to
                     Gávavencsellő. Rétköz was the realm of water until the
                     19th century; it was entwined by thousands of branches
                     of the Tisza, which formed the land into a marshy and
                     boggy area and shaped the daily lives of the people living

                     there. The 92-kilometre-long circular tour, which sets out
                     to conquer the western half of the Upper Tisza region,
                     passes through the lands of a bygone water world and the
                     Nyírség, almost all the way on bike paths. On this tour, at
                     the pumping station in Tiszabercel, you can visit one of the
                     most beautiful monuments of the history of industry in the
                     Upper Tisza region, which was responsible for the dewa-

                     tering of Rétköz. The birthhouse of György Bessenyei, the

                     most signifi cant figure of the Hungarian Enlightenment,
                     is also found in Tiszabercel. In Szabolcs, we can admire
                     one of the most spectacular and best-researched mott es in
                     Central Europe, as well as one of Hungary’s oldest and still
                     existing churches, where the Council of Szabolcs was held
                     in 1092, presided over by Saint Ladislaus. Th e importance
