Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County has several historic monu-
ments that have been revived like Sleeping Beauty in the fairy
tale during the past few years.

The real jewel of Miskolc is the Diósgyőr Castle, which had its
heyday in the time of King Louis the Great, and later became

the wedding gift of the queens of all time. During the recon-
struction of the castle, completed in 2014, exhibitions, halls,
and interiors commemorating the kings and queens were
created. A year later, the Knights’ Tournament Square and
the Fairgrounds were given over to the riding traditionalists
and to sports events. It is an interesting fact that the sunset in
Diósgyőr inspired poet Sándor Petőfi, who had a rest under

the towers, to write his poem: “Twilight”.
The Castle Hill of Füzér is one of the 7 natural wonders of

Hungary, located on a steep volcanic cone in the easternmost

part of the Zemplén Mountains. The castle was built in the
early 13th century, so it is one of the oldest castles of Hunga-

ry. It underwent a significant renovation between 2014 and
2016, when the so-called Lower Castle was built, while the
castle chapel, the palace wing, and the lower bastion of the
Upper Castle were renewed. Due to its historic monuments
and natural beauty, the castle hill is a popular destination
for excursions; the route of the National Blue Tour passes
                   through it.
The Regéc Castle is one of the largest and most picturesque

rebuilt castles in Hungary; its construction began during the

late 1200s. Francis Rákóczi II spent the first half of his child-
hood here. In 2015, as part of an unprecedented develop-
ment, the 700-year-old, four-story north residential tower was
rebuilt. Since 2016, a new visitors’ centre has been waiting
for tourists in the village. In the castle-like building, we can
visit a permanent exhibition of Francis Rákóczi’s childhood
and the archaeological finds of the area. Th e monumental-

sized old tower serves as a venue for exhibitions, collections,
and installations, with a special lookout corridor and circular
room on the top level from which visitors can enjoy a unique
panorama. In clear weather, we can even see the High Tatra
                   Mountains.
