Palaces, owl castle, “underground church”, ornate old-fash-
ioned stores. The heart of Debrecen offers a real time travel
for those who wish to explore the past and the present at the
same time. The “Queen of England Hotel”, the town’s fi rst stone
theatre, or the Piac (“Market”) Street which gave a place to fairs
famous far and wide centuries ago, tell us interesting stories.
Walking in the city centre, curious tourists can see many interest-
ing places and hear many legends from the local “storytellers”.
While wandering around, they can decipher the meaning of the
dragon-shaped door decoration in the Memorial Garden, and
also fi nd out what the golden lion-shaped doorknob on the Csa-
nak House suggests.
While the city is changing constantly, it has retained its unique
character. The cosy parks, squares, elegant buildings and
streets with many interesting curiosities offer exciting experi-
ences to the curious “treasure hunters”.
