PARK IN THE

GREAT FOREST

(NAGYERDŐ)

Each important city is characterized by a famous park and Deb-
recen is marked by the park in the Great Forest (Nagyerdő)
which was declared the fi rst nature reserve of Hungary and is
only a ten-minute drive from the city centre. The park offers comp-
lete relaxation and numerous outdoor activities under the hun-
dred-year-old trees to those who wish to spend time outdoors.
Its centre is Lake Békás (Frog) with its spectacular fountains,
and it is one of the favourite places of those who wish to relax.
At the lake, we can relax on the sun decks and take a pleasant
walk on one of the winding promenades. The park can also
be explored by bicycle, and we can jog around the Nagyerdei
Stadium on the running track which, in some places, leads
among the green leaves of the trees, and enjoy the fresh air. In
the playground, a “controllable” giant frog, a carp rope course
and, among other things, a playhouse waits for its young and
enthusiastic explorers.
From spring to autumn, the Ködszínház (Fog Theatre), a unique
sight in Hungary, offers special experience for the walkers in
the park. After dark, the 30x10-metre water spray is turned in-
to a cinema screen, where the visitors can watch short fi lms and
special laser animations about Debrecen. The open-air stage,
the Aquaticum Debrecen Spa Complex, the sports centre, the
Nagyerdei Water Tower, the zoo and the amusement park pro-
vide all-day recreation for all members of the family in the Great
Forest. On the gastro promenade in front of the Aquaticum
Debrecen Open-air Spa, many restaurants and cafés offer local
fl avours and a variety of delicacies to the passersby.
