                                                                 and artists

Nógrád is certainly the land of the great Hungarian cre- ists from the county created lasting works of art. From the
ators. We can proudly say together with Balassi, “Oh my painter Jolán Oláh to the poet József Szepesi. Among our
sweet homeland, you good Hungary. Who bears the shield contemporary artists, the Kossuth Prize-winning painter
of Christianity…” We can encounter the memory of the Péter Földi, who lives in Somoskőújfalu, and is an Artist of
great poet all over Nógrád county, from Balassagyarmat the Nation, stands out with his completely unique imagery
                     to Somoskő. carrying serious messages.
Following Madách, we can make a complete circle of Nóg-
rád, from Alsósztregova through Csécse, Ecseg, Csesztve,
and Balassagyarmat to Alsósztregova. In the order of the
stops, the cradle, the altar, the divorce, the chosen place of

residence, the place of public life and finally, the coffi n. An
exciting journey. And the biggest Palóc, Mikszáth. We can
find traces of him everywhere in our county. However, we

would rather recommend visiting only two places of his

life. The museum in Szklabonya, his native village, and the
memorial house in Horpács, his former favourite place of
                     residence.

In Pásztó, after visiting the House of the Oskola (School)
Master, we can find the memories of Benjamin Rajeczky

and Kálmán Csohány, and the legacy of Gyula Benczúr
and István Szabó, Sr. in Benczúrfalva. Film director István
Gaál and the National Actor Ferenc Zenthe left lasting
traces in Salgótarján. Albert Szentgyörgyi showed an inter-
est in the natural sciences while growing up in the mead-
ows around Buják, and later became a Nobel Prize winner.
It is worth visiting the village of Buják, the scene of the
great scientist’s walks, which the painter Oszkár Glatz also
found beautiful. So much so, that he moved there to paint.
The self-taught gypsy painter and poet János Balázs lived

and worked in Salgótarján. He created a school with his
authentic art. Following in his footsteps, many gypsy art-
