The county’s industry

                                     is “picking up”

In 1898, the construction of the Silk Weaving Factory was
started in Tolna. In the factory, owned by the Hungarian

state, production was started in 1900. Fifty kilograms of silk

yarn were made a day. The raw material was provided by its
own Hungarian silk cocoon, because the Bezerédj family
established silkworm breeding in the county. Th e “Memo-
rial Room” which preserves values of the industrial history,
is located on the premises of the factory. The Silk Cocoon

                     Warehouse is a special sight.
Bonyhád’s internationally renowned enamel factory was
founded and registered in 1909. It earned its fame with the
manufacture of enamel plaques, and won a gold medal for
them at exhibition in 1926. Since 1999, its products have
the Qualified Excellent Product trademark. It is a prominent

                     national value and a “Tolnaicum”.
The Kölesd-Borjád Pellet Factory is the most prestigious in-

dustrial monument in the county. It was founded because the
industry and the hunters needed large quantities of shotgun

pellets, which were difficult to buy from abroad.

The construction of the nuclear power plant was started south

of Paks in 1969, and has been generating electricity as the
country’s only nuclear power plant connected to the power
grid since 1987. Today, it generates slightly more than half
of the domestic power supply. During its establishment and
operation, the Hungarian expertise accumulated in the fi eld
of nuclear energy is not only internationally renowned, but

also another Tolnaicum. The Information and Visitor Centre
began operating in 1995, and the Museum of Atomic Energy
opened its doors to visitors in 2012.
