of 1,200 metres, has a temperature of 65 °C and has a rela-
tively high salt concentration. It is primarily effective in the
treatment of joint, chronic gynaecological, and urological
diseases, however, thanks to its stress-relieving effect, it is
able to pleasantly relax anyone after a hectic weekday.
The Cave Spa in Miskolctapolca is an att ractive destination
for visitors from around the world, and its water and the cli-
mate of its cave system also have a medicinal effect. It mainly
has a benefi cial effect on joint diseases, while its salt content
is lower than that of the medicinal waters, so we can bathe
in it for an unlimited time.
Travelling further, the next stop to find medicinal water is
the north-eastern corner of the county, where the treasured
thermal water of Sárospatak was found by exploratory drill-
ing in 1959. The 38 °C medicinal thermal water of the Vég-
ardó Spa Bath is recommended for the treatment of joint
and vascular diseases. The impressive complex built to the
designs of Imre Makovecz is pleasing to the eye.
The delicious and healthy food is life force itself, and the
medicinal water of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén is life itself. Spas
with medicinal water can be found all over the county, which
refresh the body and the soul.
There is a spa in Mezőkövesd, similar to Bogács, where the
medicinal water was found while drilling for oil: in 1939,
a 30-meter column of hot water erupted from the land of
Lajos Zsóry instead of mineral oil. The spa can be recognized
from afar by its characteristic sulphuric smell. The water of
the Zsóry Medicinal Bath and Spa is not only one of the
most valuable natural treasures of Hungary in terms of its
healing effects but is also unprecedented in Europe.
Just 15 kilometres away, the Spa of Bogács awaits those who
love water programmes; however, travellers will not miss
medicinal water if they head east rather than north.
After travelling 50 kilometres, the Tiszaújváros sign greets
travellers, where the spa, rated as a national spa in 2001,
awaits its visitors. Its water rises to the surface from a depth
