Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén is the second largest county in
Hungary, with three hundred and fi fty-eight towns and
villages. Borsod was named after the fortress to which it
belonged. The fortress was presumably named aft er Bors,
its warden. In the Hungarian language, the suffi x “d” was
associated with names of places, which is why Borsod
means a place belonging to Bors.
Abaúj also received its name from a fortress, Abaújvár. In
the Middle Ages, the Aba clan ruled the region, and this
clan’s name appears in the name of the region.
Zemplén was named after the hillfort near Zemplén in
Slovakia. Zemplén comes from the Slavic word “zemlja”,
which means earth, soil.
The triple unit has become the landscape where one can
find everything one could wish for. Culture, nature, which
includes both plains and hills, streams, lakes, medicinal wa-
ter, most delicious food and drinks, history and tradition.
And not only the locals understand, see and know this.
Th e significant size of the protected areas shows the great
number of natural and cultural historical values, even in a
national context. The county has 3 national parks (Hor-
tobágy, Bükk, and Aggtelek National Parks), 6 landscape
Our protection districts, and 17 nature conservation areas. 3
of Hungary’s 8 World Heritage Sites are located in the
county: the Tokaj Historical Wine Region, the Aggtelek
heritages Karst and the caves of the Slovak Karst, as well as the Hor-
tobágy National Park - Th e Grassland.
Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County has 7 Hungarikums. Th e
Tokaji Aszú, the Matyó folk art, the Tokaj wine region,
the Vizsoly Bible, the Hollóháza Porcelain, the Aggtelek
Karst, as well as the stone culture of Bükkalja are all values
that, one by one, embody the many characteristics of be-
ing Hungarian.
