Our cultural values, which have been preserved, are summa-
rized in the “Csongrád-Csanád County Repository of Values”.
The tradition-preserving work of the Márton Kerekes Folk
Song Circle and Zither Orchestra is a traditional value that
is exemplary in the survival of the treasures of the Hungarian
folk song and folk music in a broader sense. The zither of the
Great Plain has become an integral part of the folk traditions
and folk music over the past nearly 100 years. It represents
a special value in its way of making, tuning, and the use of
sounds. Another typical instrument of the Southern Great
Plain is the hurdy-gurdy, which used to be a popular musical
instrument among the peasants.
Among the handicrafts, the fur embroidery in Hódmező-
vásárhely is of outstanding importance not only as a cultural
heritage of the town, but also of Hungary. Compared to other
European folk arts, the white embroidery in Apátfalva is ex-
tremely important in Hungarian folk art.
Mindszent and Mártély were considered to be fi shing villages,
so net-making has a long history in these places. In the 1950s,
almost every second household was busy making nets.
The black pottery of Szentes is made using a special process,
the so-called reduction burning, and has a unique decorati-
on and design that reflects the local characteristics. Hódme-
zővásárhely also has a prominent place in the “world” of ce-
ramics, especially the tradition of the 19th century folk ce-
ramics.
